Saber!  How many Fate/stay night figures can I acquire before I play the game?  … … ^^:;;;

Maids and Lily are fine and all but for a sword wielding babe, it’s about time we have a nice action pose.

When it comes to cast off or extra parts or whatever, this is how I like things.  Nice and simple.  Two swords to choose from and they both fit easily into her hands.  ^_^

Went for the no background just to try and spark some creativity for today’s shoot ^^;

Nice metal peg for support  ^^

Only problem with her pose is that her arm blocks most of her mouth.

I guess that could be a positive thing if you’re tired of yelling expressions ^^;

Base is pretty nice.  Are manufacturers finally leaning away from the plain bases?  Or maybe it’s just the ones i order ^^;

Excalibur has a nice solid feel, though I’m still waiting for a nice chrome finish someday :P

Armor is likewise solid.  No crazy gift armor but a faithful representation of the original art ^^

Now unfortunately that… what do you call it… gah, words fail me.  The front flap of her outfit… has some sort of weird problems…

It almost looks like a piece of plastic is covering it and there are air bubbles trapped.  As far as I could tell there wasn’t any film on it thou… ;_;

Something about her head, ribbon… outfit details… feels like they could’ve been a little finer.  But it’s still not bad as is.

The charged up version… errr… “Invisible Air”?  is made of clear plastic but unfortunately that means without some fancy lighting it looks pretty dull ^^;;

Luckily with some lights and post processing we can get it to look energized :P

And alas the group shot didn’t turn out at all as I would’ve liked.  White balance is on the warm side, but when I correct it the pic looks a bit too flat… Ah well.  I’m sure I’ll order another fate/stay night figure someday and take more pics then.  Isn’t that rin coming out soon? :P

I think this version is my new favorite for armored saber… hard choice if i had to pick between her and alter maid ^^;

A great saber in a solid 1/7 scale.  Definitely recommended.

Finally!  Meant to have this review out a lot earlier but azunyan love & vn02 pushed it out a bit.  Above I was actually going for a full on silhouette but didn’t execute the lighting properly… ended up pasting a bw version of the pic over the original then just erasing over the flame to add some color… turned out ok maybe i guess?  ^^;  lemme know whacha think

Nice colorful box that’s actually quite wide yet narrow.  Even without the mondo base they still needed to fit her twin tails

So the first thing I thought when setting up for this review was, “Well, screw being original, I liked my shots last time on black, let’s try that again…”

Turned out pretty nice I guess but then I remembered why I did all those shots on white… bit harder to see any details when she’s melting into the background ^^;; (like the black bg for style purposes though)

Alrighty, well, now you can see a bit better.  ‘course now you can see my inexperience with white lighting ^^;

I’ll have to try again, but part of my problem is that i wasn’t having much success illuminating my light box with my smaller light so then my background is way blown out… not sure how you normally describe it but it seems to detract from the subject when your background light is overpowering…

But enuf of my photo woes, just look at her!  A pleasure to behold from all angles… for once I enjoyed doing the once around ^^

As you can well see brs has her coat off… it actually attaches to the base with it’s own peg.  It also has an awkward sort of peg that she grabs onto.

Thankfully it didn’t take me tooo long to get it in ^^;

You might notice her skin tone is a bit more healthy… not sure if that’s consistent with the actual color but super pale isn’t my thing so I didn’t have any qualms tweaking the white balance ^^;

Execution is very solid.  No complaints from me ^^

Base is very nice.  Not as nice as the rock cannon release but as always, just compared to a plain white disc, it’s amazing :P

I thought it was a really nice touch with the broken blade stuck in the floor ^^

Like the first release, just love how her hair is flowing everywhere all crazy

And of course this is the black blade ver, very nice to add another blade to my collection ^^

Now strangely I didn’t notice any instructions in the box so I had to check online for the direction of her blade… but then from what I could tell it looked like the official shots had the blade facing forward?  Couldn’t figure out why she’d be holding the blade that way so went with it the other way (my reasoning being that if she swung it from this position the blade would actually contact instead of the back of the sword?).  Ah well, let me know if there’s a reason for her to be holding it the other way.  Oh and about the instructions… did she come with any?

again like the previous release you just have to switch out her bangs rather than mess with a separate flame piece.  Caution on this version though it seems like you could easily rub off some paint on her arm trying to get it in place.

The economic brs I’d say ~ retailing 3,000 yen cheaper than the previous release, all she’s lacking is a crazy cannon and base. and I’m sure some prefer the blade to the canon anyway.

Index!  Alas, the poor thing seems to fall out of her role as a main character despite having the series named after her ^^;  Maybe it’s that pity that got me to buy her :P  Anyhow, we’ve got Good Smile Company’s 1/8 release here today, and I’d say it’s a solid get for her fans.

Seems like the series’ creator has a pretty big story in mind, having spawned over 20 novels… alas I wasn’t able to keep up with the anime very well, and didn’t really feel like spending the time trying to do so after one viewing ^^;

Though she may have devolved to a touma-biting gag, loved her introduction as a fixture on touma’s balcony ^^;

Good Smile delivers her to us in her trademark robes, clutching sphinx (?).  Alternate pair of hands & her hat also included.

I believe the pose is taken from an illustration but I couldn’t find it for some reason… at any rate that would explain why it looks familiar…

Her robes have been shaded so prevent that flat look with solid colors.  Personally thought it turned out nice.

Thought some shallow dof would go nice with her expression~

Wish they had more detail on the top of her head to take your attention away from the seam…

And noticed some weird coloring abnormalities in the tips of her hair…

As usual it didn’t really bother me too much though since I only noticed it when looking at my pics ^^;

The gold trim on her robes came out nicely I thought.

And though the safety pins may look pretty rough… I had a heck of a time getting the shot off… i.e. you probably won’t see ‘em much anyway ^^; (not to mention it’s a macro shot ^^;)

Will have to experiment more with the soft focus filter… was reading you should use harder light to create strong highlights/shadows for the filter to interact with… Tips welcome if ya have ‘em ^^

Another figure for vocaloid lovers, world is mine miku!  Like BRS, this interpretation of her comes from a well received supercell release.  Well… technically i think i heard that brs wasn’t actually based off miku…?  Anyhow, on with the review~

Yet another release with a non-standard base.  Extremely non-standard ^^;

Huge and fitted with a frame and stand so you can either prop it up or hang it on your wall.

Was dissapointed that you can’t remove the frame.  Don’t plan on hanging her on my wall so I woulda preferred something less conspicuous.

miku sticks pretty dang well to the base thanks to some magnets so you should have no fears hanging her.

After reading james’ review I was on the lookout for flaws and unfortunately they certainly turned up.  Above you can see the sort of sloppy looking execution of the black bow.

At this magnification the pattern on her shirt looks a bit unrefined although I think it’s fine at regular viewing distances.

Perhaps the bigger flaws in my copy were on her hair.

Luckily you can’t really see them unless you’re really looking.  Unless you view the view resolution version of the above pic you might not notice:

Personally the only time I really look this closely at my figures is for the review so the flaws won’t bother me so much.

Hmm looks like I didn’t do the lighting properly above to see the things in her hair ^^;;

Paint job aside I love how her hair was done ^^

They did a weird translucent finish with the tips, not quite sure why ^^;

Dress looks alright, nothing special I guess.

Even after getting into miku music and niconico, brs isn’t my favorite or anything, though she did grow on me a little…

But after doing this review, I’m definitely into the figures!  Ended up liking this one a lot more than I expected ^^

As previously mentioned I ordered her through Tenso.  An interesting proxy service that gives you more control over the buying process.  Unlike Goody Japan (who I use frequently), Tenso provides you with a Japanese address so that you can place the order yourself.  You simply use your Tenso (Japanese) address to check out and they’ll ship it to the Tenso warehouse.  Once it arrives it’s like a usual proxy service – they’ll bill you for handling, domestic shipping, and finally shipping to your actual home address.

Their site’s pretty easy to use and available in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean so I’ll leave the detailed price comparison to you :P

As far as I was concerned it was a pretty painless process, even with a warehouse relocation that occurred while I was waiting for BRS to ship ^^;;

Back to the figure under review, shall we?  I was hesitant to do any black shots since she’s got so much black already… but after seeing my first shots I liked the effect ^^;  Kinda like she’s just melting into darkness or something?  Perfect for a nice emo moment, no? :P  ‘Cuz of that i left some of these purposely on the dark side.

One thing about this figure… it definitely has attitude.  Yeah she’s only 1/8 or what not but she has the presence of a 1/7 with a massive, beautiful base and her insane rock cannon.

Zipper is a little rough under macro scrutiny but very nice at normal viewing distances ^^;

Not sure if it’s worth the extra cost, but the base is definitely top tier material.  Looks great!

Based on the price of the next brs figure, the other thing you’re paying for is the rock cannon.  Again, maybe not worth it for everyone, but I think it really gives this figure some flavor.

The details on it are also very nice — it looks like a big heavy chunk of metal, despite its light plastic construction ^^;

Wasn’t quite sure exactly how to rest the cannon in the indented base – there’s not peg or anything to fix it there, it just rests in her hand.

You can kind of see in the above shot – brs’ right hand supports the canon.

One thing I don’t really like about figures is having to futz with them to get them set up… unfortunately brs definitely has this issue with the chain ^^;;;  It comes loose and it’s up to you to wrap it up and around her and her canon… there’s some instructions but I wasn’t really able to follow them very well… ended up just sorta improvising.

Don’t have too many photography tricks up my sleeve so I apologize if you’re sick of my subject-off-center shots ^^;  Though I do like using them for wallpaper since it leaves a nice area for desktop icons.

Tried something new with my light tent… put my soft box in back of it and then used my other light as the main…

Took a lot of futzing but I think it ended up nice in the end.

Below, lovely hair, eyes, jacket + a look at the chain… but I’m not sure it makes a good shot ^^;  maybe?

If you’re dexterous enough you’re supposed to hang one part of the chain in her hand, which I somehow managed ^^;

A nice cast-off solution – the eye flame is just part of the hair and sits over her eyes.  As such you just replace her bangs, not the whole face.

With room for nanael to boot! :P  Obviously there was no room for her blades but until I get a better dust solution, this will keep her much more protected than out in the open.  And did I say 2 new detolfs?  Yes, that brings my total up to 5:

My entire scaled collection!  Action figures and nendoroids (puchis & normal) didn’t all make it in, but everyone else did!  I think I might actually have room for one more in the very corner, but it hurts every time I buy more furniture.  Not only is it money that could be going towards other things, it’s one more huge pain when I (inevitably) move again ;_;  *sigh*  Ah well, better to enjoy the moment then wait ’till I buy a house :P (specially here in the bay area… who knows when that’ll happen -_-)

Congrats if you read this whole post :P  To sum up, a very nice piece for your collection.  Must buy for BRS fans, and if the rock canon/base aren’t too important to you, you have a second chance with the sword version coming out next year ^^

A massive 1/4 entry from Good Smile Company to accompany their previous Nanoha release.  Like most 1/4 pvc releases, nothing spectacular in the detail department but her size alone makes her an interesting addition to any collection ^^

Nanoha owners will recognize the matching box, stand and leg support.

Luckily she seems to stand fine without the leg support so you can review without it getting in the way ^^

Ah yes, forgot to mention, also had new camera lewt arrive last week!  These first pics were taken with my brand new EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens ^^  Got it more for taking low light pics and portraits (i.e. not figure reviews) but also turned out nice for the full body shots of fate.  Trying to get her with a 100mm lens on a 1.6 crop body requires a bit more room ^^;;

Being a swimsuit figure it comes down more to the pose, face, and hair for me.

Alas the part where this figure falls short for me is the face.  …though I should qualify that by saying I didn’t quite like the way they drew her in StrikerS either.  Seemed kinda too square? or flat?  Maybe it was just certain episodes.  In the figure her face also comes out a little flat or something?  Can’t really put my finger on it.

Or maybe it’s the viewing angle and/or my lighting?  Like… i like how she looks in the above shot (08) but in the one above that (06) it doesn’t look right to me.  Also doesn’t look so hot on my bookshelf right now.  Might be the shadow from her bangs making her eyes dark…

For the pose they were just reproducing the source pic and it seems pretty accurate?  Again maybe it’s the viewing angle but it feels sometimes like it’s lacking something.

Also nice to see nanoha without jaundice ^^;  (my last review’s pics’ white balance was all off ;_;  this time i did what i should’ve been doing for a long time – took a picture of a piece of paper and used the custom white balance setting.  took a second and their skin isn’t yellow ^^;;)

Definitely glad to have the new lens.  No way I woulda fit both of ‘em with my 100mm.

You’ll just have to humor me with all these paired shots with nanoha.  Wanted to give her some love after my initial review ^^;;

dust strikes again!  this is why i have to do my reviews the day i unbox.

There was one flaw i noticed… kinduv unsightly mark on her leg ;_;

Pictured above is after I tried rubbing it off with some water.  Guess I’ll have to try something stronger later… or maybe just leave it since it’s hard to see :P

Not a bad pickup but wish i was more satisfied with her looks from all angles.

Hopefully this is some of the last remnants of set completion disease ^^;  Had the same misgivings when I saw the preview pics but decided to push ahead to have the pair of ‘em together.  Plus it’s fate-chan.

Retailing at 12,000 yen with an exchange rate that’s around 90 yen/$ or less… she’ll cost ya.  Nowadays that’s a price I reserve for must-have figures but fate slipped in before my budget reductions.

Wasn’t actually going for the wet look, but wanted to wash off the figures i was going to shoot and didn’t want to go through the trouble of drying them/waiting for them to dry.

To be honest there’s just something that doesn’t really do it for me with the water… droplets look unnatural i guess…  If i had actually been trying to be artistic or something maybe I woulda tried to disperse the drops to make them finer/more natural… guess that’s what i get for being lazy :P

On the other hand I think I’m happy with how the pics turned out otherwise.  Sharp as ever thanks to my trusty macro lens and tripod ^__^

I believe Rin hasn’t gotten any/much love on this blog…

There was/seemed to be a lot of hype around the shuraki figures at the time… kinda disappointed they never came around with the followup series.

mishiro has kind of a… what to say… generic moe?  school girl + dual wielding katana’s?  Almost seems forced or something? ^^;;;  I don’t mind though.  Katana wielding babes suki dakara na~

Ryoko’s tights provided some interesting patterns to the background above ^^;

One last one… kemeko!  Didn’t wash her ‘cuz… well, i hate putting her tentacle tube things back on ^^;

Didn’t really edit any of these so hopefully the colors and such turned out alright.

I gotta get around to taking more pics, even if not for reviews.  Had fun with this session and it’s a good motivator for keeping my figures clean.

Well, she’s finally here.  If I remember there was quite a fuss when she was announced and for good reason.  Great pose, great costume, great character ^^  Personally very pleased how she turned out, didn’t really spot any flaws to complain about.  Update: figure.fm version of the review is up (fewer pics, but they are displayed at 900 pixel width in the post.  Though if you want high rez, I have included 1920×1280 versions of a handful of the pics in this review post (mostly the wallpaper-ish pics))

Those indentations on the box worried me at first ‘cuz I thought the packaging had been damaged during transit (box was wrapped with tissue paper so I couldn’t see it was intentional) ^^;

I know it’s for the protection of the figure but I hate those wire ties -_-   These ones gave me more trouble than  usual for some reason -_-

Absolutely love the pose.  In general I prefer action poses so this was an easy choice over alter’s version.

Clear plastic peg supports the scabbard though there’s an alternate hand without it if you prefer.

Of the few sabers I own, she easily has the best face too.

You’ll have to humor me, I got carried away with the macro and depth of field with only her eye in focus ^^;

Very nice determined expression without resorting to the open mouth scream (not that i have anything against that expression)

I’m still embarrassed to not have started on any of the fate/stay night stuff yet… so i have no idea what the names are for any of the weapons or anything ^^;;;

One of the swords actually fits in the scabbard but I couldn’t really figure out of what use that would use that would be.

personally prefer the metallic looking armor to the white colored alter version.

Was displeased to find a blemish on saber’s breastplate when I got her out the packaging… luckily it was just a glue residue or something.  It came off after a few minutes of rubbing with some water & tissue.

Not trying to put down the alter version here (^^;) but another reason I went with GSC was the nice base.  Yet another rare case where it actually added something positive ^^

Definitely glad I waited for this version ^^  Well, not that I don’t like the shueisha version but if I had to pick just one… ne? ^^

I’ve got all the manga lined up to read but the only progress I’ve made in the series is the anime… and there I’ve only gotten through the 1st season and a couple episodes of the 2nd -_-

Nevertheless something about the character and series persuaded me into getting the figure ^^

I guess the thing about not having a perfect setup is that each review is an adventure.  Feels like I can never get consistent results.  And lately I’ve really been struggling with the white/color/or whatever balance… never feels like the skin tones are right.

Finally figured I could compare to the official shots for a reference, but that was well after the shots were taken ^^;

The base is absolutely lovely.  At least by my standards.  I totally don’t mind simple and the solid chunk of plexiglass is perfect.  Mirror makes even better ^^

Moka fits onto a peg on the cross, which is turn fits snuggly into the base.  Other than that the only assembly you have to mess with is getting her rosario into her hands.

Having completely forgotten what the prototype looked like I first thought I’d have to connect the cross to the chain on her neck.  Thankfully that wasn’t he case or I woulda broken something for sure ^^;

Dress looks great, though better at non-zoomed distances ^^;

Head to toe, pretty happy with all the details of this release ^^

Shallow depth of field was killing me in this review too ^^;;  Had to decide between having not much in focus or shooting at the angles I wanted.  Or closing up the aperture but then I woulda had to worry about diffraction.

I believe miku was originally released in September, 2008 – quickly followed up with multiple rereleases.  Good Smile Company’s 1/8 release is pretty solid, though at the moment I wish I had a 1/7 ^^;  (seems like Max Factory is working on that?)

I think it’s awesome that the all time most viewed video on niconico is みくみくにしてあげる♪ (youtube) – miku miku ni shite ageru – I’ll mikumiku it for you.  6.4 million views, 1.9 million comments, and 139k people added to a “my list” (niconico’s playlist system).

It wasn’t really until I started watching all the stuff on niconico that I really started to get into the vocaloids.  All the fan art, videos, mmd (mikumiku dance) and fan renditions of songs is really amazing.  I’ll try to put together my own niconico guide for the less language inclined folk sometime soon ^^;

Been having a bit of a problem with my lens… it’s so powerful all the dust is captured in excruciating detail ^^;;

…and that’s after I spend five minutes dusting orz.

I’d stick with some less magnified views but I’m having too much fun, so dust be damned :P

Plus it lets you see how well the details were done on miku ^^

I find myself using the live view so I can zoom in digitally 10x and manually focus.  Pretty good insurance that my shot is focused, then I just have to worry about getting a narrow enough aperture to keep the rest of the pic in focus ^^;

You can see my background wasn’t high enough for the angle above ^^;  Was nice and blurred out though so thought I’d leave it.  Then decided to see how it’d look without the bg.

Turns out this is the figure I gave away for the contest I held last December.

nanu ended up winning by guessing how many volumes of manga I would have when the contest ended.  Hopefully I’ll have some extra cash to hold another contest this year.  Always fun to give things away ^^

One nice thing about having a sharp lens and higher resolution pictures is that I can finally make 1920×1200 wallpapers that look as sharp as the resized smaller pics!  I’ll have to update my figure wallpaper page with some new stuff.

Unfortunately miku’s out of stock at hlj and hobby search.  Perhaps other stores or some place local may still have her?

I’d be more diligent linking other reviews but since she’s older I’ll just stick with foo-bar-baz and James‘ reviews.  James has links to 5 other reviews if you need ‘em ^^
